Mia Ruyter: Wedding

Traditionally, weddings are rituals of social recognition of a committed relationship. Weddings mark the introduction of a couple to a sexual relationship. Weddings are the joining of families. A wedding is God’s blessing of romantic love. A wedding is a wish for children. A wedding is a business arrangement between two people or two families.

Today, weddings are massive consumer events. Weddings are spectacles. Weddings are anxiety-producing for the engaged and the family of the engaged. Weddings are a chance for everyday people to pretend to be royalty. Weddings are a chance for couples to control a picture of their history.

As always, weddings are a leap into the unknown. Weddings are a risk. Weddings have unforeseen consequences. Weddings are erotically charged. Weddings require couples to pretend that they are sure of the future.

Weddings are parties where single friends meet future spouses.
